Why is the 7 plus exam so competitive?

In most areas there are only a few independent schools. These will be mixed between primary and secondary. A lot of these schools will also be “through” schools meaning they take children from reception all the way to year 11. Preference will be given to children that have started in reception so this leaves fewer places for those coming in through the 7 plus exam.

Averagely there is between 7 and 15 applications for every place at a through school.
