Most exam boards set four papers for English. Two for English Language and two for English Literature. All GCSE English Language exams require students to read, analyse and compare unseen texts from 19th, 20th and 21st centuries.

Obviously this differs slightly from exam boards but aims to look at the same skills. An example of a recent AQA English paper included these questions:

Paper 1: Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing

Paper 2: Writers’Viewpoints and Perspectives

The English Literature Exam requires students to demonstrate their knowledge of a set text that they have studied in several different categories including: Shakespeare, A 19th Century Novel, Post 1914 British Novel or play and a selection of Poetry. These list of texts are set by the exam board however there is freedom within this for schools or home-schoolers to decide which texts to teach.

The AQA English paper example for Literature included:

Paper 1: Shakespeare and the 19th Century Novel

Paper 2: Modern Texts and Poetry.
